I finished the Hunger Games (by Suzanne Collins) about a year ago and just read Catching Fire(the second book). I loved both these books. If you don't know what they're about: The hunger games is about a futuristic world where there is a Capitol and twelve surrounding districts. Two tributes from each district, one boy and one girl, are taken to participate in the Hunger games, an event televised live in the capitol where 24 boys and girls from ages 12 to 18 fight to the death.
Katniss, the main character, lives in district 12 with her mother and younger sister. She has a friend named Gale that she hunts illegally with in the woods for a source of food in a place where food is very scarce. On the day of the reaping(when the tributes are chosen), Katniss's sister, Primrose, has her name chosen as the girl tribute. Katniss bravely volunteers to go in her place. The boy tribute from district 12 is Peeta Mellark. He and Katniss are mere acquaintances, but he practically saved her family from starvation several years before, making Katniss regret the fact that they are both in this tough situation together. By tough situation I mean potentially might have to kill each other. You get the drift.
In the hunger games, the capitol controls everything: the climate, the supplies, and can even create man-made disasters to either bring tributes together 0r kill them off. Katniss and Peeta pretend to be in love to increase their chances of survival, although Peeta doesn't seem to be pretending.
Suspense, suspense! This book is packed with it. Every page keeps you wanting to read more.
A lot of people I've talked to about this book are choosing between Team Peeta or Team Gale as Katniss's love interest, (you'll see why in Catching Fire)...personally, if I had to choose, I'd pick Team Peeta because I think Peeta is a great character. He sticks up for Katniss no matter what, and he puts others needs before his own. When talking to Katniss the night before the Hunger Games begin, he tells her he doesn't want to become part of the Capitol's game and that he would rather die himself than win somebody completely different. Wow. Go Peeta.
I basically adored this book as well as Catching Fire and can't wait for the third to come out. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.
